Samsung, LG Unveil Curved OLED TVs

Samsung and LG both unveiled innovative curved-display OLED TVs at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Tuesday. They kept the new products under tight wraps until the launch.

The wide displays are concavely curved five or six degrees, which endures less screen distortion and has a similar effect to an IMAX screen, the two firms claim.

The unveiling was shrouded in secrecy. Samsung put its TV up and distributed a press release only 30 minutes before the opening of the show.

Twenty minutes later, LG put up three TVs near the entrance of the display hall and handed out its own press release.

They had apparently been racing each other to the finish. Samsung said it will roll out the TVs in the first half of this year, while LG promised a faster release.

At the 2012 CES, the two companies unveiled their 55-inch OLED TVs. which recently hit the market with a hefty price tag of W11 million (US$1=W1,062).
Japanese firms showed their determination not to be left behind. Sony and Panasonic unveiled 56-inch 4K OLED TVs at the show, which are 1 inch larger and have about four times higher resolution that Samsung and LG's OLED models.

Chinese electronics firms also made an impression. Hisense and TCL unveiled the world's largest display TV, a 110-inch UHD gadget, with the same features as Samsung's main products at the show. Haier showcased an 84-inch UHD TV.

Kwon Hee-won, the president of TV business at LG Electronics, told reporters, "Chinese companies are rivals to be reckoned with because they have a big domestic market, so we're trying to keep one step ahead with innovative ideas and designs."

He added Japanese firms "have lagged behind a little recently, but I think they'll continue to develop technologies based on the many original technologies they already have."
