THE Audi A3 Sportback pipped the new Range Rover to be named Car of the Year at a prestigious awards ceremony last night.

The updated version of the German firm’s best-selling model also drove off with Small Family Car of the Year at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

Many experts expected the Range Rover to win but it had to settle for Luxury Car of the Year.

Chas Hallet, editor in chief of What Car? magazine — which holds the annual awards — said: “The Sportback sets a new benchmark for premium hatchbacks.”

Ford clinched four gongs including Best Super-mini for the Fiesta and Best Family Car for the Mondeo. The VW Up was Best City Car.
