Although Apple has added only a handful of new features to iOS 6.1 - there are some tweaks to iTunes Match downloads and the Passbook app, for example - it also includes bug fixes and security updates so it's important to make sure you upgrade.
Upgrading is simple and should take less than 15 minutes. Here are the steps to follow.
1. Make sure you have backed up your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad before you upgrade iOS.
In the unlikely event that the upgrade goes wrong, you will be able to restore the device completely and start again.

If you backup your device to your computer, simply plug it in, load iTunes and let it automatically backup. If you use iCloud for your backups, go to Settings, iCloud, Storage and Backup and then tap 'Back Up Now'. Whichever method you use, it will take a few minutes to complete the backup, depending on how much is stored on your device.
2. Plug in or at least make sure you have enough battery to upgrade.
You don't have to plug the charger into your iOS device before you upgrade but it's a good idea to do in case you suddenly run out of power. If you do decide to upgrade without plugging in, then make sure you have enough battery remaining. The upgrade should take less the 15 minutes.

3. Download and install the software update.
You can upgrade iOS from the device itself. Open the Settings app, go to General, then Software Update and wait while the device checks for updates. Once it has found the new version of iOS, tap Download and Install and leave your phone to get on with the upgrade. Don't try to use apps, make calls or send texts while the new version of iOS is installing.

If you'd rather upgrade using iTunes, then connect your device to your computer and wait for it to sync the device. Then click on the icon for your device in the upper right corner of iTunes. Then choose Summary and click Check for Update. Once you choose Download and Install iTunes will handle the rest. Again, don't try to use your phone until the update is complete.
4. Confirm your iCloud details and start using your phone
After completing the update, your device should restart. You may be asked to re-enter some iCloud information and possibly set some security questions. Once that is complete your iOS device is ready to use.
