Exclusive: Google Bans Facial Recognition Apps in Google Glass
Google won't allow any face recognition apps for Glass.
Do not worry about the so-called "Glass holes"-that automatically identify the faces of the people around them. Google officially announced via post on the Project Glass Google+ account last night that it would not be approving any controversial app for Glass, at least not immediately.
Glass has caused a public uproar over privacy concerns. Privacy or desire has been a significant issue for detractors of Google Glass, who point out that users wearing the camera-carrying devices can take a picture by simply winking an eye and without having to verbally say, "Take a picture" or pressing a button, anywhere ... including in strip clubs, casinos and movie theaters, restrooms and locker rooms. Therefore, Google is being extra-sensitive and careful. If you see someone wearing Google Glass on the street, and if he or she gives you a wink-the wearer might be taking your picture.
"Many have expressed both interest and concern around the possibilities of facial recognition in Glass," the company said. "As Google has said for several years, we won't add facial recognition features to our products without having strong privacy protections in place."
Google is wise to go slow.
Now that developers have Google Glass, the first apps are starting to come out. However, before that, it is worth noting the disagreement towards Google Glass.
However, for those who want facial recognition apps to be available for Google Glasses should remain hopeful, as Google is not totally shutting down the idea. The company wants to address the privacy concerns involved before making such an app available.
Until then, privacy advocates can rest easy-the monster has gone back into its castle.
