Google Goes the Apple Way for Google Glass Apps
by Rutu Ladage
Google’s android system is much loved and hated at the same time. While developers and users love the freedom and openness it provides, Apple worshipers detest the very same thing. Though Google is all about open software, looks like the search and innovation giant will change the rules for their latest gadget: Google Glass.
The developer version of Google Glass is all set to be rolled out soon at a hefty price of 1500 dollars. However, looks like Google will not be lenient with developers this time. The apps for Google Glass will come with a whole new set of rules and restrictions, much unlike the android software on which Google’s smartphone success is based.
The most important change is that Google Glass apps will not be allowed to use advertisements. The apps will have to be completely advertisement free. The developers can not even share user data for signing advertisement contracts. Google prohibits sharing of data with ad companies for the new Google Glass.
An advert-free experience is sure welcome but considering advertisements are the only source of income for certain apps, the limits might not be welcome by developers.
Moreover, Google has also prohibited users from charging a fee for their apps. No adverts and free apps sound too good to be true, isn’t it? Developers are hoping for the same. Though developers are highly disappointed with the high level of restrictions, they are hopeful that the restrictions will be only for a limited period. Developers are hopeful of Google relaxing some aspects of the restrictions before long.
However, according to analysts, the move is a smart move by Google. Considering that Google Glass is a personal device apps with too many adverts might prove to be intrusive. Also, Google Glass being right in a person’s field of vision, developers and Google will have to be extra careful. Any wrong step or even the tiniest distraction can risk the wearer’s safety.
The developers devices are already being sold and Google expects to being Glass to the common man by the end of the year at comparatively cheaper rates.
